I was approached on the internet a few years ago by the social media sites Facebook and Twitter and invited to join them. Always being interested in something new on the web I did join them both, I registered on Facebook as Leglessfool and I registered on Twitter as Legless. At the time I wasn't really interested in these sites and eventually I forgot about them, occasionally in my email I would receive emails from them saying that somebody wanted to be my friend or that somebody was following me, but I just deleted the emails and I totally ignored them.
Then this year on 17 March, 2011, I connected to the internet and I checked my email, as usual for me there were dozens of emails so I just quickly scanned through the inbox marking the ones that needed to be deleted without reading, this accounts for about 98% of them which are mainly just spam and scams. Then one email really caught my eye, it was from facebook telling me that someone on there wanted to be my friend, I had not bothered with facebook for more than three years now it had never really interested me, but glancing at the subject line of this email it stated that Charlotte Ploy Reed wanted to be my friend on facebook and this really made me sit up and take notice! So when I logged on to facebook that morning, I discovered that this Charlotte Ploy Reed that wanted to be my friend was indeed one of my own twin daughters in Thailand. I had not seen or been in contact with her for the last 12 years even though I had tried very hard to find them both, so this came as a very pleasant surprise to me that day, there were even lots of photos of her on facebook too and I also found out that her twin sister Katria Louise Reed had a facebook page too.
This then brought social media back to the forefront with me, I could now see a practical use for these sites, I had found my family again. Over the next few days I updated my profile on facebook, I logged on to twitter and made some changes to my profile on there too and I started getting interested in these social media sites again. Then just a couple of days later I received an email telling me that someone named Samantha Musset wanted to be my friend, so I logged on to Facebook and agreed even though I did not know who this was and eventually it turned out that this girl was the daughter of a long lost cousin of mine, someone whom I had not seen for more than thirty years.
In conclusion; I guess
these social media sites do have their uses even if I do tend to be
anti-social myself these days.
